Traditional Painting Studio

From bold acrylics to delicate watercolours and richly layered oil paintings, our Traditional Painting Studio is a space for creativity, exploration, and skill building. Participants can learn colour theory, composition, texture, and technique while developing their own artistic style in a relaxed, supportive environment. Whether you’re picking up a brush for the first time or returning to painting after years away, there is always room at the easel.

Oils

Oil painting is one of the most timeless and expressive forms of art, known for its rich colour, depth, and ability to create beautifully layered effects. Unlike fast-drying mediums, oils allow artists to work slowly and thoughtfully, blending colours directly on the canvas and building texture over time. From dramatic landscapes to detailed portraits and abstract works, oil painting encourages patience, experimentation, and individual style.

At The Shed Studio, oil painting is approached as both a technical skill and a personal creative journey. Participants are encouraged to explore composition, light, shadow, brushwork, and colour mixing while developing confidence in their own artistic voice. Participants will find the Colour Lab: from Colour to Creation to assist with colour theory for their work. It is often the act of moving away from that blank canvas that drives you mad!! Whether someone prefers traditional realism or expressive contemporary work, oil painting offers endless possibilities for storytelling, emotion, and artistic growth.
